Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
This week marks the 20th anniversary of Ang Lee's epic martial arts drama Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Based on the fourth book in Wang Dulu's Crane-Iron Pentalogy, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon tells the story of Yu Jiaoling, the daughter of a government official, who secretly longs to become a renowned swordswoman and adventurer. When shown a legendary sword, called the Green Destiny, Jiaolong attempts to claim the sword for herself. She is later confronted by its former owner, Li Mu Bai, who sees her true potential and seeks to train her, only to learn that she is the disciple of his master's killer. With its captivating cinematography and outstanding fight choreography, Crouching Tiger Hidden recaptures all the wonder and excitement of classic martial arts cinema while elevating the genre with poignant storytelling, brilliantly executed by its stars, Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, and Zhang Ziyi.

Wednesday Nov 25, 2020
Wednesday Nov 25, 2020
In this bonus lookback episode, we examine the merits and flaws of M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable. Released in 2000, Unbreakable sought to deconstruct the classic tropes of superhero lore while providing a more grounded origin for its protagonist, played by Bruce Willis. Its plot centers on David Dunn, a depressed security worker who discovers he may possess invulnerability after learning he is the sole survivor of a horrific accident. With the aid of an eccentric comic book art dealer, played by Samuel L. Jackson, he begins to examine his past and, in doing so, unearths his true purpose.
