In May of 1983, an article was published in California Magazine about a group of superstar pilots training at a naval facility in Miramar, CA., dubbed "Fightertown, U.S.A." The story would go on to inspire one of the biggest blockbusters of the 1980s, Top Gun, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this week. Tony Scott's aerial action-drama centers on ace pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and his RIO, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, as they attend the Navy's prestigious Weapons Fighter School. The movie would go on to become one of 1986's most successful films, and its soundtrack would earn an Academy Award for Best Original Song with Berlin's "Take My Breath Away".

Originally planned as an anthology series, Paramount's Friday the 13th franchise has become a hallmark of 80s slasher cinema. The second installment, released in April of 1981, introduces Jason, the presumed-dead son of part one's killer, Pamela Voorhees. After witnessing her death at the hands of one of her would-be victims, Jason continues his mother's work, killing anyone who dares set foot near Camp Crystal Lake.

Denzel Washington plays Detective Keith Frazier, a veteran NYPD detective, who enters into hostage negotiations with a clever bank robber, played by Clive Owen. When word of the hostage situation reaches the bank's founder (Christopher Plummer), he employs an artful power broker (Jodie Foster) to protect the secret contents of his safe deposit box from the robbery.

In this five-year anniversary lookback, we examine the merits and flaws of Zack Snyder's Batman v. Superman. Released as the second film in Warner Brothers' DCEU franchise, BvS opened to extremely mixed reviews, becoming one of the most divisive films in recent history. Snyder would later re-edit the film and release Batman v. Superman: The Ultimate Edition, adding over an hour of previously unreleased footage to the theatrical version. Sometime in the late 1980s, a local New York music columnist would write an article exposing the violent street culture surrounding a growing crack epidemic. The popularity of that article would inspire a film script, and that script would ultimately emerge as New Jack City. Directed by Mario Van Peebles, New Jack City depicts the rise and fall of Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes), a small time hustler turned drug kingpin. Desperate to stop him, a headstrong detective puts together a task force that includes loose cannons Scotty Appleton (Ice-T) and Nick Peretti (Judd Nelson), who vow to get Brown off the streets at any cost.
